I've been reading comics for a long, long time. When I was a kid I got hooked by the Harvey titles such as RICHIE RICH, CASPER, WENDY THE WITCH and HOT STUFF along with others. Then I moved to ARCHIE and the gang. I also was fascinated by the Sunday funnies from the age of three on up. As I got older I began exploring MARVEL & D.C. Everyone pretty much knows MARVEL & D.C. Around the mid nineties is when I began exploring the more independent titles and companies. You don't hear about them as much and they're harder to find and you have to explore more to find the good ones. You will read some bad ones to find them but the path is fun. I still occasionally will pick up a Marvel or D.C. Trade from time to time if I think a story is interesting and I can get the whole plot in that one trade. For the most part though I'm into the independents. It makes sense. I'm an independent cartoonist myself.
The part that hinders most folks is the reading the bad comics to find the good ones... the GREAT ONES. Well, guess what? That's what I'm here for. I will read thru the independent comics and find the good and great ones and then tell you about them. You get recommendations on independent comics and don't have to do any of the heavy lifting.
The first recommendation will come now....UNEARTHED: A MITCH BYRD COMIC SERIES.
Mitch Byrd is an awesome artist. If you see him at a comic convention or a show just give him a blank page and pay him for a commission and tell him it's artist's choice. You will not be disappointed with the results.
Mitch has worked for Marvel and D.C. and other companies thru the years I want to talk about his latest project, UNEARTHED. It created, written and illustrated by Mitch Byrd and Barry Gregory does the digital paint, lettering and editing. It's done in the old style of adventure, sci fi and pulpynes of the old pulp magazines. When they did the kickstarter for it they describe is as, “Dinosaurs! Monsters! A hollow Earth and an alien experiment gone way out of control! It's like a B-Movie with a Billion Dollar budget!” Now if that don't sound freakin' cool I don't know what does. It's 48 pages of colorful beautifully drawn comicy goodness. Part One is out now of the three part series. You can find it at INDY PLANET ( just a click away)
I've already gotten my copy. I loved it and I'm patiently waiting for the next issues. I picked mine up from Mitch in person at PENSACON this past February. I picked one up for a friend from Mitch at 3 Alarm Comics during Free Comic Book Day and I know Mitch will be at the GULF COAST FAN FEST in Biloxi, MS in October. You can order a copy from INDY PLANET and take it to the GCFF and get Mitch to sign it there. You won't regret getting this book.
Have a Bubbatastic day and I'll see ya in the Funny Pages.
